Ibrahim’s Journey
Ibrahim’s Journey to the states began with an
e-mail received on October 30. It announced an event for Challenged
Athletes in the U.S. He immediately understood that it was something
he should not miss. The event was to take place in six days! Ibrahim
had no money for airfare or a visa for entry into the U.S. Ibrahim
knew, however, that the San Diego Challenge Triathlon was meant
for him. Participating in the event, would provide him with the
opportunity of a lifetime!
Ibrahim's first goal was to raise the money necessary
to travel abroad. He brought the e-mail to the
World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) where he works as seed specialist.
Ibrahim presented the e-mail to his supervisor and friend Tony Simons.
Tony agreed to help Ibrahim raise the funds but understood that
securing a visa in such short notice would be difficult.
Obtaining a visa to enter the U.S. one day before
departure is next to impossible for even connected foreigners. For
a poor African, known to few outside of Kenya, most would say it's
impossible. Ibrahim's visa was secured in less than 24 hours because
he is a widely recognized and respected figure in Nairobi. Agents
at the U.S. Embassy respected his ability and understood his cause.
On November 1, Ibrahim boarded the plane headed towards
a new chapter in his life. He brought with him a single bicycle pedal and show,
newspaper clipings of his most recent athletic achievements, an email posting
of the Challenge Triathlon and most importantly his faith. From the beginning,
his journey was filled with unexpected surprises including an emergency landing
in Germany and bus ride to Amsterdam. Curious border patrol officers needed to be
convinced of his athletic purposes and Ibrahim was prepared. The newspaper articles
of his athletic performances and letters from San Diego convinced customs agents of
the purpose of his journey. Uncertain thought, that anyone would be at the San Diego
airport to greet him, Ibrahim traveled on blind faith. On November 3, he arrived safely
for the first time in the U.S. and the next chapter began.
